Prayer

ACTS

When I talk about prayer, I’m talking about more than the prayers you pray with other people listening in. It is also more than asking God for things—even when we’re asking for other people. Prayer is about getting to know God.

Let me share with you the first formula I learned when I was growing up, based on the word ACTS.

A is for adoration, which is praising God and telling Him how truly awesome He is and how much you love Him.

C is for confession. When you confess your sins to God, be as specific as you possibly can. You’ll be more aware of your weakness and better able to ask for God’s help. And make sure that you not only confess but also repent of, or turn away from, your sin.

T is for thanksgiving. Thank the Lord for all the many blessings that He gives you daily. Again, be specific, because not only does it bless God’s heart, it opens your eyes to how great He is.

S is for supplication. Supplication is humbly asking God to help you with your personal needs and the needs of others.
